About The Work

I've been working on the landscapes for the greater part of five years. I have completed hundreds. The sizes range from 5"X7" to 6" X 12" to 8"X16". They derive foremost from visual memory using notes (words) from journal entries and digital video footage as points of departure and ports of entry. I often start in one place and end up somewhere else.More than a few times I've completed a work to discover the location later on i.e what I thought was a sacred spot of the Taconic PKWY reveals itself to be the frozen feilds of my local farm as seen from above in winter (Landscape 10). We invent out own world and it seems I've gotten good at rediscovering and (re)inventing mine. They sometimes feel like memomento mori as each day we find out that the earth is shifting away with alarming speed and that our forests are dying faster than once thought. Why would we even expect them to die? I see the Lanscapes paintings as humble and poetic. They are: The Deleware Water Gap, 17B in Sullivan County NY, a beloved ridge that overlooks Bethel Woods or Northern CA...Why B/W and sepia? I feel it helps me render the drama of light the way I experience it. The musician Jay Yarnell pointed out to me that the works were about light.

Light. That's really what they're about. Light.

I'm a dedicated non specialist. Besides the Landscapes, I constantly work from the figure using both models and my reference library, rendering them real or abstracting them to the essential. I work with whatever moves me. The mix and merge of medium to render again the light.
